Pre-shave oil
Oil goes on first, so the razor has something to move through instead of dragging over dry skin.

Hot towels
Then hot towels, left on long enough to soften the beard and open the skin. This is most of the reason a barber shave takes three quarters of an hour and a cartridge razor takes four minutes.

The razor
A straight razor, with the grain first and then across it. One pass at a time, at angles you cannot reach in your own bathroom mirror.

A cold finish
A cold towel at the end to close the skin back up, and that is the shave.
Is it the one you want?
Book it if
A first barber shave, a wedding morning, or the day you decide the beard is coming off. Book it when you are not watching the clock: the three quarters of an hour is the point, not the overhead.
Book something else if
A quick tidy between haircuts. That is beard shaping at $35 and twenty minutes. And if you are growing a beard out rather than removing it, the razor is the wrong end of the shop.

How is this different from a headshave?
Same razor, different place. The headshave takes the clippers down to the skin on your scalp first and then goes over it with the razor, with a hot towel and balm to finish, at 60 dollars and about 30 minutes. The classic shave is the face, and it runs 65 dollars and about 45 minutes.
Can I have it with a haircut?
Yes, and it is the better booking if you want both. Haircut and shave together is 130 dollars and takes about an hour and a half. Booked apart that is 145 dollars for a haircut with wash plus the shave, across two appointments.

Two Georges is unhurried, great music is playing and a handshake and a cold beer is always offered. Tommy has always nailed my beard trims, and you can tell he cares about the quality work he does. It is a place that feels distinctly Fremantle.
Relaxed, quiet and well designed compared to busier barbers with loud tunes, screens or nowhere to sit. They treat you like proper mates, taking the time to talk through your cut or long term goals. My new favourite spot in Freo and Perth.
